Tourism
continues to boom in Tibet
LHASA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)
- Tibet Autonomous Region hosted a record 3.72 million tourists over the
first 10 months of the year, well over a million more than the total for the
whole of last year.
The flood of tourists brought the region 4.4 billion yuan (about 550
million U.S. dollars).
"The plateau is of great appeal to overseas
tourists - one out of ten tourists were from overseas, said Wu Yingjie,
deputy chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Government during a recent
interview with a three-member press delegation from the Russian Information
Agency (RIA).
The huge leap in the number
of visitors can be attributed to the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway on
July 1, 2006, according to He Benyun, deputy head of the Regional
Development and Reform Commission. |

Beijing
sees 300,000 tourists on first day of National Day holiday
Major tourist sites in Olympic host Beijing welcomed 300,000 tourists on
Monday, the first day of the weeklong National Day holiday, according to the
capital's holiday office.
Due to a drizzle in early morning on Monday, the capital's influx of
tourists slightly dropped compared with the same day last year, the office
said.
The average rental rate of the city's luxury restaurants and other hotels
stood at about 60 percent on Monday.
About one million pots of flowers were used in major parks to form 25 theme
parterres featuring the Olympic Games and festive atmosphere, according to
an official with the Beijing park administration center.
"The decorations are a rehearsal of the park appearance arrangement for the
2008 Beijing Olympic Games," said the official. The event is scheduled to
take place from Aug. 8 to 24 next year. (Xinhua News Agency October 2, 2007) |

LHASA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Mount
Qomolangma, the world's tallest peak, received 25,000 visitors in the first
six months of this year, said tourism authorities in southwest China's Tibet
Autonomous Region. Tibet had received more than 1.7 million tourist arrivals

China's
Wall becoming less and less Great
BEIJING (Reuters) - Sand storms in
northwest China are reducing sections of Great Wall to mounds of dirt and
may cause them to disappear in about 20 years, state media said on
Wednesday. Visitors climb wilder, crumbling sections that are not officially
open to the public and stretches have become popular sites for summer raves. |

Official
tells tourists Tibet is open in winter
LHASA, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- A
leading tourism official in Tibet says he wants to change the perception
that Tibet is "closed" to tourists in winter so more visitors can see the
region's attractions in off-season. Pagzho, director of the Tibet Autonomous
Regional Bureau of Tourism, said travelers on tight schedules who want to
visit Potala Palace should avoid going during the peak summer season.
Pagzho said the misunderstanding that it was impossible to travel in Tibet
during winter should be changed.
The Potala Palace, one of many scenic sites in Tibet, was a priority sight
for many tourists.
However, the palace administrators restrict visitors to 2,300 a day and the
palace is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m, making tickets highly
sought-after during the summer months.
Tourists are forced to stand in long queues starting from early in the
morning in order buy tickets to the Potala Palace.
Pagzho said tourism and cultural relic protection departments had been
working together to attract more tourists to Tibet after October.

Guests
Say: International, not foreign
A foreign friend? It sounds very good in
Chinese but not in English. There is suggestion that the term of
"international visitors" or "international guests", or just "visitors" or
"guests", instead of "foreign friends", is better to show Beijing's
hospitality during the Olympics in particular.
Ellen, an Australian girl who has been studying and working in China for
some time can understand why "foreign friends" is used so much. But still
she agreed that "international visitors" or "overseas visitors" is better.
"It is ok to say 'foreign friends', but sounds a little bit impolite when
you are constantly reminded that you are not part of this country. And that
is not in consistence with the idea that people from all over the world
gather together." she said. |
