Qinghai-Tibet
Railway unaffected by earthquakes
Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the world's most elevated
railway, was not affected by the two earthquakes that hit the border of
Qinghai Province and Tibet Autonomous Region early on Monday.
"Railway traffic was unaffected, even part of the railway is in the quake
area," said Xu Chuanjie, an official with the Qinghai provincial earthquake
administration.
The Amdo Station in Tibet's Amdo County, the nearest railway station to the
quake area, reported nothing abnormal after the quakes, and a train passed
on schedule at 3:02 a.m.
A 5.0-magnitude quake struck at 1:56 a.m. at the Mongolian-Tibetan
Autonomous Prefecture of Haixi in the west of Qinghai, and another one
measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale hit the same area at 5:44 a.m.
No casualties or damages have been reported after the quakes.

China
says recent visa policy in line with Olympics practice
BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Foreign Ministry
spokesman Qin Gang said here on Tuesday that China's recent visa policy
arrangements did not mean the suspension of multiple-entry visas and due
arrangements have been made in line with the practices of previous Olympics.
"We made due arrangements regarding the visa applications of foreigners
based on the practices of previous Olympics and other large-scale
international sports events, and in light of China's laws and regulations,"
Qin told a regular press conference.
He said the arrangements have been made to ensure a safe environment. He
said that did not necessarily mean that the issue of all multiple-entry
visas would be suspended.

Tour groups still allowed in Tibet
Tour groups are still allowed to travel to Tibet
but the region's tourism bureau has suggested they postpone travel plans
following Friday's Lhasa riots in which at least 13 people died.
"Tourism facilities around the scenic spots, such as the Jokhang temple,
have suffered considerable damage in the riots, lowering the reception
capacity," said Wang Songping, deputy director of the Tourism Bureau of
Tibet, adding local government had not imposed a ban on travelers to the
region.
"So, we suggest travel agencies suspend organizing tourists to come to
Tibet."

Tourism
continues to boom in Tibet
LHASA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)
- Tibet Autonomous Region hosted a record 3.72 million tourists over the
first 10 months of the year, well over a million more than the total for the
whole of last year.
The flood of tourists brought the region 4.4 billion yuan (about 550
million U.S. dollars).
"The plateau is of great appeal to overseas
tourists - one out of ten tourists were from overseas, said Wu Yingjie,
deputy chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Government during a recent
interview with a three-member press delegation from the Russian Information
Agency (RIA).
The huge leap in the number
of visitors can be attributed to the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway on
July 1, 2006, according to He Benyun, deputy head of the Regional
Development and Reform Commission. |

Beijing
sees 300,000 tourists on first day of National Day holiday
Major tourist sites in Olympic host Beijing welcomed 300,000 tourists on
Monday, the first day of the weeklong National Day holiday, according to the
capital's holiday office.
Due to a drizzle in early morning on Monday, the capital's influx of
tourists slightly dropped compared with the same day last year, the office
said.
The average rental rate of the city's luxury restaurants and other hotels
stood at about 60 percent on Monday.
About one million pots of flowers were used in major parks to form 25 theme
parterres featuring the Olympic Games and festive atmosphere, according to
an official with the Beijing park administration center.
"The decorations are a rehearsal of the park appearance arrangement for the
2008 Beijing Olympic Games," said the official. The event is scheduled to
take place from Aug. 8 to 24 next year. (Xinhua News Agency October 2, 2007) |
